Oakland, CA — The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) issued a statement today applauding Governor Newsom’s actions around fossil fuel extraction in California.

Today’s announcement from the Department of Conservation includes a moratorium on approvals for new oil extraction wells that use a high-pressure cyclic steaming process. This process has been linked to oil leaks recently in Kern County. The announcement also includes actions to improve health and safety near oil and gas facilities, and a third-party review of hydraulic fracturing and related permitting.

The following is a statement from Mary Creasman, CEO of the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV):

“We applaud Governor Newsom for taking these important steps towards protecting California communities from the pollution of fossil fuel extraction and the impacts of climate change. We know that with frequent and intense wildfires in California it’s not enough to just react to the climate crisis. We have to go to the root of our problem – our dependence on fossil fuels.

This action lays an important foundation for the visionary leadership we need in this critical moment in time for California. It is an important first step that builds on the work of the legislature and a critical bill, AB 1057, by Assemblymember Monique Limón.

There’s lots more to do to protect our communities from the dangers of fossil fuel extraction and pollution, and to support a thoughtful transition of our economy away from extractive industries. This is the role of government, and we are committed to working with the Governor and the legislature to ensure a just and comprehensive implementation.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
